Shaykh al-Albaani (rahimahullaah) says in his introduction to Bidaayat Usool fi Tafdheel ir-Rasool – The Superiority of the Messenger (of Allah) (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) – pgs. 5-7:

“Know, O Muslim brother, that it is not possible for anyone to rise to this station of loving Allah and His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) except by tawheed (singling out) of Allah, the Most High, alone in His worship, and by singling out the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) alone for following from among the servants of Allah, due to (Allah’s) statement:

‘He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)) has indeed
obeyed Allah’

[Surat un-Nisaa, 4:80]

and His statement:

‘Say (O Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur’an and the Sunnah), Allah will love you.’’

[Surah Aal ‘Imraan, 3:31]

And (the Prophet) (‘alayhi ssalaat wa salaam) said:

‘No, by the One in whose Hand my soul is, if Moosaa was alive, he would have no choice but to follow me.’

[Shaykh al-Albaani adds the following footnote: “Ad-Daaramee, Ahmad and Abu Nu’aym narrated it from the hadeeth of Jaabir bin ‘Abdillaah, and it is a hasan (good) hadeeth as I clarified in ‘Al-Mishkaah’ and others”]

I say:

So if someone like Moosaa, the one who Allah spoke to (directly), cannot follow other than the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), then can anyone else do that?

Hence, this is one of the definite evidences of the obligation of singling out the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in following, which is one of the requirements of the shahaada (testimony): ‘anna muhammad ar-rasoolullaah (that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)’ (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

Therefore, Allah, the Blessed and Most High, in the before-mentioned aayah, made following him (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) alone to be a proof of Allah’s love for (the follower).
